The Gobi 392, With Systems Built Around the Cargo

This AAL shop build is a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 in Gobi. Its equipment record combines a MASS cargo layout, rear seat deletes, auxiliary power, on-board air, recovery equipment, and communications.

The photos show how those systems share the Jeep’s space: the fridge and drawers at the tailgate, electrical equipment beneath the cargo floor, and gear mounted around the spare tire and inside the cabin. The gallery includes different stages of the build.

This shop Jeep also serves as a platform for testing and prototyping AAL products through use on the trail and at camp. The earlier build record lists Teraflex Olympus beadlock wheels, 38×13.5R17 Nitto Trail Grappler tires, and 4.88 gearing by Revolution Gear. Those specifications document a stage of this build, rather than a requirement for every 392 setup.

Where the Build Started

Before the trail miles and later upgrades, we packed six boxes of AAL gear and headed to La Porte, Indiana, to pick up the Gobi 392 and install its MASS cargo system.

Make the Rear Opening a Working Area

The recorded cargo system uses a MASS Plus platform with a Flip’n Slide, two 6-inch drawers, one 4-inch drawer, an Ultralight Flat Slide, and an upper cargo shelf. The original equipment list names a Dometic CFX3 45 fridge.

The camp photos show the slide and work surfaces extending beside the open tailgate. The JL VersaTable adds a separate surface at the tailgate. Compare the full layout with your fridge dimensions and allow room to stand, open lids, and reach drawers.

Use the Rear Cabin as Part of the Cargo Plan

The equipment list includes both 40% and 60% rear seat deletes, along with seat-back, side, door, and overhead MOLLE panels. The photos show mounting space and cargo equipment behind the front seats.

That configuration exchanges rear passenger seating for cargo space. Decide which seats you need before choosing components, and confirm that the exact seat-delete and door-panel combination will fit together. The gallery contains multiple stages, so each photo should be checked against the parts you plan to use.

Keep the Electrical Equipment Accessible

The original record names a REDARC Manager 30 with color display, a 1000W inverter, and two EcoWorthy 30Ah batteries. A cargo battery bracket, fuse holder, cutoff switch, and wiring work are also listed.

The installation photos show electrical equipment beneath the cargo area and access through the platform. Plan charging, circuit protection, cable routing, and service access together. The recorded battery sizes describe this build; they do not establish runtime for your own equipment.

Give Air and Recovery Gear Dedicated Locations

The recorded on-board air system uses a dual ARB compressor with ARB Pressure Control, an under-seat bracket, and a driver-side connection kit. The exterior photos show separate recovery-equipment mounts around the spare tire.

The parts list includes a Spare Tire Platform, Packout adapter, Tracks Rack, MAXTRAX boards, and a first-aid kit. Those choices provide a layout reference for equipment you want to reach from outside. Check the current mounts and clearances for your spare wheel, tire, and tailgate.
