MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Boards are traction boards for getting a stuck vehicle moving again in sand, mud, snow, and loose terrain.
They are one of the standard recovery-board options for overland and off-road builds because they are light enough to handle quickly, large enough to create useful bite under the tire, and shaped to stack cleanly with the rest of your recovery gear.
If you are building a serious trail kit, recovery boards fill the gap between “just air down and drive out” and needing a full winch or another vehicle. They are simple, mechanical, and useful when traction disappears.
Why carry recovery boards
Use recovery boards under the tires to create traction when the vehicle is stuck in soft, loose, or slick terrain.
MAXTRAX lists the MKII at about 3.4 kg / 7.5 lb per board, so they can be moved and repositioned quickly.
The boards stack together for rack, bed, trailer, or cargo storage. Use the right pins, straps, or mount for your setup.
Common uses
- Sand recovery
- Mud and loose dirt
- Snow-packed trails
- Overland recovery kits
Recovery boards are not a replacement for knowing how to recover a vehicle safely, but they are one of the fastest tools to deploy. Clear material away from the tire, place the board where it can bite, and move slowly enough to let the lugs do their job.
The MKII shape includes integrated handles and shovel ends, making the boards easier to carry, position, and clear around the tire.

Frequently asked questions
Are MAXTRAX MKII boards the same thing as recovery boards?
Yes. “Recovery boards,” “traction boards,” and “MAXTRAX boards” are common search terms for this type of recovery tool.
Do these fit every vehicle?
The boards are vehicle-agnostic, but storage is not. Confirm your rack, carrier, bed, or cargo area can safely secure the boards before trail use.
Are mounts included?
This product page is for the recovery boards. Use the product selector and cart details above as the source of truth for exactly what is included with the variant you order.
Recovery note: Use recovery boards carefully and keep people clear of the vehicle path. Recovery gear should be matched to the vehicle, terrain, and recovery method.
