Very Important

Powder coating cannot create an exact paint match. The light reflects differently off of powder coating than it does paint. What we are providing on this page are examples of powder coating colors and the OEM paint colors they RESEMBLE. If you want an exact paint match, please consult with a local body shop to have them match your specific vehicle.

Powder coating is a manual process done by humans. When you purchase powder coated products from AAL, we coat them for your order. Occasionally, that means delays with non-standard colors, resprays for less-than-perfect conditions, etc. We have a very high standard with powder coated products. We will work to get your parts coated in the best condition possible before they leave the building.

Powder Coat Options

We get asked pretty often about different shades of powder coat and how they look applied to various products. This page serves as a living list of powder coated products and the Jeep colors they most closely resemble. We’ll keep adding to it as products and colors roll in.

Most of our powder coat comes from Prismatic Powders. They have a well-organized library with a lot of information on their colors. If you’d like to find a powder coat color close to your OEM paint, the link below is a great starting point — they’ve done a lot of the legwork matching their colors to automotive OEM references.

Jeep Color Reference

Prismatic Powders now produces several colors specifically formulated to match Jeep OEM paint — we’ve marked those as Official Match below. For colors without a Jeep-specific formula, we’ve listed the closest available option, marked Approximate. Even official matches won’t be identical to your OEM paint — powder and paint reflect light differently.

This list is updated periodically. Custom and non-standard colors can go out of production without notice. If you’re ordering a color outside our standard options, keep that risk in mind. → Search all Jeep colors on Prismatic

🚫

AAL is not responsible for powder coat colors not meeting your standard for a match. Powder coating and paint are fundamentally different processes and will never be identical. If you require a true color match, order your products in raw/unfinished form and take them to a local body shop. A professional painter can put a light meter on your actual vehicle and spray-match with automotive paint — that is the only way to get a true match.

What do PSS, PSB, PMB, and UPB mean?

These codes are Prismatic Powders’ product line identifiers that describe the finish type and gloss level:

  • PSS — Polyester Solid Tone, Gloss/Semi-Gloss: Solid, opaque colors ranging from high-gloss (85+ GU) to semi-gloss (37–70 GU). Smooth, consistent color with no metallic flake.
  • PSB — Polyester Solid Tone, Matte/Satin/Flat: Solid, opaque colors with a lower-gloss finish — matte, satin, or flat (7–35 GU).
  • PMB — Polyester Metallic, Gloss/Semi-Gloss: Metallic coatings with metal flake for a shimmer effect. Usually high-gloss or semi-gloss. Often require a clear top coat for full effect and durability.
  • UPB / UPS / USS — Urethane-based formulations. These use a different base chemistry than the PSS/PSB/PMB polyester series, which affects flexibility and chemical resistance.

High-Salt Environments

If you live somewhere that salts roads in winter, or near the ocean, read this before ordering powder coated products.

Powder coating is durable, but it is not impenetrable. Trail use, road debris, and everyday wear can chip or nick the coating. In high-salt environments, salt can work its way between the powder coat and bare metal at any chip or scratch — causing corrosion that spreads under the coating and damages your parts from the inside out.

If you are in a high-salt environment, we strongly recommend ordering your products in raw/unfinished form and having them zinc-coated (galvanized) before powder coating. Zinc acts as a sacrificial barrier between the metal and the elements. Powder coating over zinc is the only reliable way to protect metal parts from salt-driven corrosion. A local plating or coating shop can handle the zinc step before the powder goes on.

AAL is not responsible for corrosion damage resulting from coating chips, nicks, or exposure to salt environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Powder coating is an art, and thus succumbs to the criticism and curiosity of such. Hopefully the information here helps shed some light on the powder coating process. If you have further questions, reach out at [email protected].

Will powder coating protect my steel products from rust?

They will add a layer of protection, however if at any time they are scratched or nicked, it will leave the material open to corrosion.

Is the textured black powder similar to bedliner?

No, it is not nearly as aggressive or protective. Unlike those coatings it will scratch and show rub marks or wear down over time with lots of traffic.

What is the best powder coating for protection?

Powder coat choices with a two-coat process will yield slightly more protection than the single coat process just due to thickness. Textured colors are perceived as more durable because they are better suited to disguise chips and nicks (ie. inner fenders) than your Satin or Gloss coatings. Gloss is the hardest coating to make perfect — any debris caught in the process will show due to the high level of reflection.

Is powder similar to paint? Can you mix powder to create a paint match?

Powder coating is an extremely different process than paint. It is not something they can usually mix to match — you would need to look through www.prismaticpowders.com and order swatches to hold up to your color if you can’t find a suitable color online. If you have a local powder coater that can see your color in person, that is probably the best route for color matching. If you want an exact paint match, you should order products from us in raw/unfinished form and work with a local body shop to match your specific vehicle.
